Trained Non-partisan Volunteers Will Ensure Fair Voting Access on Election Day
Indiana voters can call the toll-free, non-partisan Election Protection hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) for assistance or to report issues
INDIANA, OCTOBER 22, 2024: As misinformation continues to spread ahead of the November 5th General Election, the Midwest Voting Rights Program at Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights is stepping up efforts to ensure that all eligible voters have access to trustworthy information and can cast their ballots without facing barriers. On Election Day, non-partisan legal volunteers will take calls on the Election Protection hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE and answer questions from Indiana voters. In addition to a field operation in Illinois, non-partisan field volunteers trained by Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights will be deployed in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to support Count US Indiana’s non-partisan Election Defense program.
"Indiana voters are facing various challenges, including misinformation and confusion about new voting laws,” said Ami Gandhi, Director of Strategic Initiatives and Midwest Voting Rights Program. “Our Election Protection program will ensure that every eligible voter in Indiana knows their rights and has access to accurate, non-partisan information.”
Since 2001, the Election Protection coalition has fought against disenfranchisement and promoted fairness in elections. The coalition mobilizes thousands of volunteer attorneys nationwide to uphold voting laws and provide non-partisan information to voters. The Midwest Voting Rights Program at Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights partners with Count US IN, Common Cause Indiana, and other local organizations for Election Protection efforts in Indiana. These partnerships are key to ensuring that Indiana voters have the resources they need to make their voices heard.
"Indiana's voting laws can be confusing and too often create barriers that some voters find daunting. The 866-OUR-VOTE hotline is a great resource for all Hoosiers to get help making a plan to vote or if they face problems casting their ballot,” said Julia Vaughn, Executive Director of Common Cause Indiana. “We urge anyone with election questions or difficulty voting to contact 866-687-8683 for assistance."
The Election Protection program provides resources, including several language hotlines, digital outreach tools, and voter protection field programs staffed by legal volunteers to serve voters.
