CLC Awarded $50,000 Chicago Community Trust Grant to Support Chicago Nonprofits

Chicago, IL (June 5, 2014) – The Law Project (TLP) of the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Chicago Community Trust to increase the sustainability of Chicago’s nonprofit sector through its free legal services.
The Law Project is an important safety net for low-to-moderate income nonprofits and small businesses in sustaining the quality of their services, meeting critical community needs, and spurring economic development. The Law Project was launched in 1985 to improve the lives of individuals living in low income neighborhoods in the Chicago metropolitan area by strengthening community-based organizations and their capacity to meet the needs of the people they serve. Last year, TLP provided more than six million dollars in free legal services, serving individuals and groups throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.
The Law Project’s Nonprofit Assistance Program provides legal services for new and existing nonprofits on transactional legal issues, such as corporate structuring, mergers, lease and contract review, employment issues, as well as mitigating organizational risks and developing best practices. TLP also offers workshops and webinars on a variety of topics affecting nonprofits. With support from Chicago Community Trust, TLP will grow its services, with a specific focus on providing critical technical assistance to nonprofits seeking assistance with mergers, resource generating enterprises and dissolution.
