Nonpartisan All IN for Democracy Coalition Sends Letter Opposing Indiana Senate Bill 10
This week, the nonpartisan All IN for Democracy coalition sent a letter to Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston urging him to oppose Senate Bill 10 (SB 10), a bill that threatens to make Indiana’s voting and voter registration processes less accessible for Indiana voters.
The nonpartisan All IN for Democracy coalition was founded in 2015 by Common Cause Indiana and the League of Women Voters of Indiana and has grown to include 25 nonpartisan organizations working collaboratively to protect voting rights in Indiana and promote policies that make voting accessible to all Hoosiers.
In the letter, the coalition outlined how SB 10 seeks to disrupt and complicate Indiana’s election processes.
SB 10 would:
Hurt the ability of students to participate in our elections by preventing them from using state higher educational institution IDs as a form of voter identification.
Add voter roll maintenance procedures that will unfairly burden new citizens and formerly incarcerated individuals by adding unnecessary citizenship verification requirements and criminal record checks for voter registration.
Lead to wrongful voter roll purges by changing maintenance processes for voters who have not voted in the two most recent general elections.
Change voter registration information sharing with other states using a flawed data-sharing program.
The coalition urges Speaker Huston to take a stand against SB 10 and protect fair access to the ballot for all Indiana voters. Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights is grateful for the opportunity to assist the coalition with this letter.
